Artist Laura Berger paints with a very specific palette and subject matter. For years, her Earth-toned artworks have revolved around the nude female figure as expressed in a “glyphic style,” in which the 2D characters are replicated and fold into one another.
The resulting images are masses of women whose presence feels perpetually in motion—like the apex of a tidal wave; at any moment, they could come toppling over. You can’t remove one without affecting the others, and this idea plays an overall role in Laura’s work. “I’m interested,” she writes, “… [in] how we piece things together to create personal meaning and a sense of belonging to the greater whole.”
A selection of Laura’s work is now on view at the Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco. Check out her show, Sentient until December 22, 2018.
