Floral-Human Hybrids Emerge From Single Sheets of Delicately Cut Paper

Cut paper art by Kanako Abe

It’s been a while since I’ve shared the cut paper pieces by Kanako Abe. Her delicate images are crafted from a single sheet of black paper. Using an X‑Acto knife (and a very steady hand), she mimics the likes of fur on forest creatures and the veins of plants. Her most recent work features portraits of women surrounded by foliage—or sometimes combined with it.

A selection of Kanako’s original pieces are featured in her exhibition Bloom that’s now on view at Rare Device in San Francisco until September 16, 2019.
