I’m super excited to share this post with ya’ll. It’s one my favorite features, Illustrators with Ink, but this time with an extra-special Tattly spin! (Hint: it’s a giveaway!)
Tattly is a Brooklyn-based company that produces designy temporary tattoos. They work with a bunch of awesome illustrators and designers, so it’s always a joy to see what they release next. I’m happy to share one of their newest designs with you! Illustrator Kate Bingaman-Burt created this series of three lightening bolts that will electrify your look no matter how/where you wear them.
I asked her a few questions about creating this temporary tattoo. (Giveaway details below, too.)
Brown Paper Bag: What inspired you to create these designs (both old and new)? How does it connect with your other illustrative work?
Kate Bingaman-Burt: I had been drawing diamonds for several years in various places (zine covers, watercolors, ink diamonds draw over my hand drawn credit card statements. I also sewed them onto large pillows too). Lots of my work deals with money and the emotions connected to objects and purchasing things, so a diamond was a common image for me to draw in regards to my work.
The lightening bolt is another common image that I would use over an over again in conjunction with EXCITEMENT and MONEY and POWER. BOOM!
Before Tattly, had you ever designed tattoos before?
The first time my diamonds were used for tattoos was for my good friend Jason Sturgill’s project: Art is Forever. These are the diamonds that my tattly diamond tattoo are based off of. I haven’t designed tattoos, but people have gotten my drawings as tattoos. Several people are in the world walking around with tattoo bobby pins, for example.
How/where do you envision people wearing your tattoos?
Well, Richard Simmons was spotted wearing my diamonds, so that is just about the best thing ever for me. I have also been told that my diamonds are popular for weddings. I think my lightening bolts would be fun for whenever anyone wants an extra POWER BOOST to their day.
One great thing about Tattly’s temporary tattoos is that you can mix and match the work of dozens of illustrators. Whose tattoos would you recommend pairing with yours?
Jen Mussari’s Forever Tattoo would pair nicely with my diamonds, don’t you think? (get it? diamonds are forever?? 🙂
Do you have any permanently-inked tattoos? If so, where and what are they?
The only tattoo that I have is of my actual Tattly diamond tattoo. Tina from Tattly saw my fresh ink from Jason’s Art is Forever show and she asked if I would consider making it into a tattly tattoo. I of course said: YES! It’s been a trip seeing people wearing temporary tattoos of my actual tattoo. I am planning on getting more tattoos but it took me 34 years to figure out my first one, so it might be awhile.
