Flattened Ceramic Faces are the Hosts for Bold Illustrations by Armi Teva

Illus­tra­tor Armi Teva uses ceram­ics as a way to express her visu­al lan­guage. She cre­ates flat­tened ceram­ic heads with small eyes, noses, and mouths, but often they are obscured with her strik­ing sur­face decoration–flowers and oth­er dec­o­ra­tive motifs cov­er the entire face. It proves an inter­est­ing way to show­case her draw­ings, but it’s one that stays true to Armi’s background.

“My roots are in ceram­ic and glass art and design,” she writes. “From there I’ve built my way to illus­tra­tion and visu­al sto­ry­telling. Regard­less of mate­r­i­al and medi­um, my works share the same characteristics—rhythmic and bold use of col­ors and lines and essen­tial­ly pas­sion for drawing.”
