Inspired by her time spent at the dog park, artist Katie Kimmel has sculpted a series of ceramic pups who cheerfully invite us to come to play. The objects feature a variety of breeds—from poodles to Dalmatians to mutts—many of which double as vases. Katie embraces craft, kitsch, and tchotchkes, and says that she always leaves an antique mall feeling more inspired. With these inspirations in mind, she forms each of her clay pieces by hand. They mimic the qualities of a line drawing or a painting; the uneven surfaces are unique to her and the way in which Katie works and makes decisions.
A selection of Katie’s dog-themed work is now on view at the Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco until January 26, 2019.
