Hiné Mizushima (previously) creates a fantastical world of out of felt. Using that, as well as other materials like beading, she produces portraits of beetles, cephalopods, and clams. Each of her colorful has an astounding level of detail, and her felt crafts go beyond your typical representation of these creatures. Rather, through her series The Anatomy of, she shows us what’s inside.
A “small ear” squid as well as a pink and blue deep water calm are split open and reveal dazzling things. The squid is my favorite; its top half is exposed and features an array of lush textures including beading and wool. Hiné has even added a tiny fish floating around in there.
Each of the three pieces are displayed on a wood plaque with a tag that’s similar to how you’d label a scientific specimen. They were created for the show Stitched 2 that’s on view at the Clutter Gallery in Beacon, New York. I would say these felt crafts are for sale… but it looks like they’re already sold out on the exhibition website!
